A fork discovered during excavations at the Rose Theatre on Bankside will be the subject of a programme presented by British Museum director Neil MacGregor on BBC Radio 4 this spring.
Starting on 16 April, Shakespeare’s Restless World is a 20-part series that looks at the world through the eyes of Shakespeare’s audience by exploring objects from that turbulent period.
“This series gives us a chance to understand what life was like in the turbulent world of William Shakespeare,” says Neil MacGregor.
“Using 20 objects from the period – some grand, some everyday things – we can explore what the world looked like to the groundlings in the Globe and try to understand Shakespeare’s restless world.”
The programmes will be made permanently available to listen to online and download. The objects, from the British Museum and institutions across the UK, can be viewed in deep zoom, along with in-depth information about the object and their place in the culture and society of Shakespeare’s world.
The Rose Theatre, built in 1587 by Philip Henslowe, was the first playhouse on Bankside. Its remains were discovered in Park Street in 1989. Under the stewardship of the Rose Theatre Trust the site is regularly used for theatre performances.
The fork, lent by the Museum of London, will be the subject of the programme to be broadcast on 18 April at 1.45pm and 7.45pm.
The programme on 20 April will focus on a rapier and dagger found on Bankside. These weapons, lent by the Royal Armouries in Leeds, will be used as a starting point to help address issues of culture and violence in Shakespeare’s world and plays.
Many of the objects from the series will be featured in the Shakespeare: Staging the World exhibition at the British Museum this summer.

Thomas Thoroe in a silk shawl is a delightfully camp and gangling goldsmith.
Remotegoate ****

Much of the comedy derives from the reactions of ill-used wife Adriana. Angry at her ‘tardy master’, her role draws a lively performance from Elizabeth Bloom, shedding feathers from her fan as her agitation grows.
Remotegoate ****

The best comic scenes are those between servants and masters, when sympathy for the battered victims mixes with laughter at their startled reactions. Nicholas Kempsey delights as a flat-capped northern Dromio, protesting his ill-treatment in elaborate word-play or sulkily marking up bets in a copy of the Racing Post.
Remotegoate ****

The current production is part of a fund-raising and awareness scheme to promote public access and interest.Judging by the full house, it will succeed.

“Productions such as this should help attract audiences that will, in turn, allow the Rose to be preserved and developed further.”

“The production team (director Grace Wessels and House on the Hill) has repositioned events to the 1920s and this works well: the decadence, costumes, cocktails and original jazz music (kept judiciously in the background) encapsulate an era where youth and living for the day take precedence over long-term plans.”

Shakespeare’s tragic romance comes to the Rose, Bankside. For four hundred years Romeo and Juliet has never lost its popularity or universal appeal. Highly influential across all art forms and a play for all ages- a truly universal play. Shakespeare’s most adapted and internationally successful play has never been been performed at the Rose, regardless of its representation in ‘Shakespeare in Love’.
In 2012 we intend to put the record straight! As Bankside’s oldest theatre we are very pleased to present the play of ‘star crossed lovers’ on our stage for the first time.
All performances at 7.30 pm (Sunday 10th and 24th at 3.00 pm only, no performance on Sunday 17th)
No Monday Performances

The Kingdom of Lear: a place dominated by decadence, wealth, liquor, and jazz. The ageing Lear must divide his kingdom between his three daughters, but when Cordelia, the youngest of the three, is unable to express her love for the King, things begin to spiral out of the old King’s control.
Taking inspiration from the 1920’s and with original Jazz music, House on the Hill Productions brings a freshness and originality while remaining true to Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy. Utilizing the entire archeological space of the Rose, Lear will show this unique and historic space in a way never seen before.
